Perhaps inhabited since prehistoric times, Buthrotum was a city of the\u00a0Epirote\u00a0tribe of the\u00a0Chaonians, later a Roman colony and a\u00a0bishopric. It entered into decline in\u00a0Late Antiquity, before being abandoned during the Middle Ages after a major earthquake flooded most of the city. Synagogues have a large place for prayer (the main\u00a0sanctuary) and may also have smaller rooms for study and sometimes a social hall and offices. The castle is on a strategic hill point overlooking the town of\u00a0Saranda, southeast of the town centre. Divers have descended to fifty metres, but it is still unclear what the actual depth of the karst hole is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">This phenomenon is also known as &#8216;springs of Bistric\u00eb&#8217; as it is the initial water source of\u00a0Bistric\u00eb river, 25\u00a0km long, which ends in the\u00a0Ionian Sea\u00a0south of\u00a0Sarand\u00eb.
